Differences between LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) and TFT Thin Film Transistor
LCD screen type known as TFT (Thin Film Transistor) is used to control the images or the colors and for the better quality of the image in LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screen. This is done by using a transistor and attaches it to each pixel of the screen. Though LCDs and TFTs both are used for the of devices’ screen like Television set, monitor, flat-panel displays etc. but there are a lot of differences between them.
LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) | TFT (Thin Film Transistor) |
LCD is used as a generic term | TFT is a kind of LCD |
LCD is less expensive. | TFT is expensive |
Its speed is less and takes time to refresh | It has high speed and refresh quickly. |
LCD has MATTY display | TFT display is GLOSSY |
The angle of picture quality is up to 45 degrees | The angle of picture quality is up to 60-180 degrees |
It consumes less energy | It consumes more energy |
Their display is small | Their display is large |
It has a ‘Passive-matrix’ screen | It has an ‘Active-matrix’ screen |

Technical specifications of OLEDs
OLEDs (Organic Light Emitting Diode) are a light emitting flat technology. They are made by placing organic thin films in series between the two conductors. At least one of two conductors is transparent. A clear plastic foil or a glass is used as a substrate which is used to support the OLED. A transparent anode is present which adds holes (or remove electrons) when current is applied. A bright white light comes out when the current is flowing. They are made by using hydrogen and carbon that is why it is called organic. The viewing angle of OLEDs is up to 60 degrees. The required voltage for operating OLEDs is 2-10 Volts. Less power is needed and no backlight is used.
Advantages of using OLED displays over TFT displays
The advantages of using OLED displays over the TFT displays are given below:
1.The temperature range of OLED is -40ºC (-40ºF) to 85ºC (185ºF) while TFT operated in the temperature range of -20ºC (-4ºF) to +70ºC (158ºF).
2.OLEDs have the brightest display as compared to TFTs.
3.Response time in OLEDs is faster (0.01ms or less) as compared to TFTs.
4.OLEDs are thinner as compared to TFTs.
5.OLEDs other than white background have less power consumption as compared to TFTs.
State of the art technology in mobile phone’s display
In recent years it was a rapid growth in the mobile phones display technology in volume and in diversification as well. It will increase with the increase in consumer demands. Nowadays excitement advancements in mobile display technology can be seen and the user interfaces are becoming advanced and easy to use. There are few latest mobile display technologies like OLED organic light emitting diode. They are good in their exceptional color as well as in higher brightness and extremely lightweight designs. One of its applications is Samsung Galaxy Note 7. Next is AMOLED active-Matrix organic light emitting diode is becoming very popular. It is mostly used to watch movies and videos on mobile phones. It was used in Nokia N8. Then comes Super AMOLED which is a step ahead of AMOLD with capacitive touchscreen technology, low power consumption and high brightest
